10/11/2006 - Supplier Coming To Area
The Lake Martin area will have its second automotive supplier to locate here after an announcement is made today that Kia supplier KwangSung Corporation will open its first American operation in Dadeville.
The supplier, which will employ at least 150 when Kia comes on line in West Point, Ga., will locate in the William T. Thweatt Industrial Park, according to Don McClellan executive director of the Lake Martin Area Economic Development Alliance.
"The location and the workforce were the two driving factors to this company locating its first American plant in Dadeville," McClellan said.
KwangSung not only is a supplier to Kia, but Hyundai and Daewoo.
The West Point, Ga., Kia plant will be less than an hour away from the industrial park. Hyundai Motors USA, meanwhile, is just over an hour away from the industrial park.
While there will be 150 employees in the plant when Kia comes on line in West Point, McClellan said there could be room for expansion.
"I think there may be room for expansion," he said. "And there may be more opportunity down the road."
KwangSung will build a 66,000 square foot facility in the industrial park. McClellan said the company expects to have the building complete in nine months to a year.
KwangSung is a supplier of flexible tubing, labeling and sun visors.
McClellan said 60-70 employees will be in place in the first year.
The first automotive supplier to locate in the Lake Martin area is SL Alabama. It employs about 300 people.
